A boy received a football scholarship despite never playing competitively due to serious health issues caused by social and financial pressures. After undergoing fitness assessments, he was granted support on compassionate grounds to complete his education, highlighting how opportunities in sports can have significant academic implications, even for non-participants.
As a Games teacher, he had a way of being professional. I always helped him to mark the football pitch, clearly practicing all the mathematical construction lessons on those curves, circles and right angles.
He once tried to introduce a game for us who were not so talented in the main games. We would throw plastic plates as improvised tools in the throw and catch game. Those plates would glide and dodge the ones trying to catch them and because many participated in that “silly game”, it was always an evening spectacle. An all inclusive activity especially for lower classes of Form 1 (S1) and Form 2 (S2).
Gentlemen Basiniya, we all witnessed the potential of the students that represented Siniya in the Volleyball Championships at the District where they emerged Champions for the fourth consecutive year and at the Regionals where Siniya emerged Second in Kigezi Region. The team is now expected to compete at the National stage, competitions that will be held at Dr. Obote College Boroboro in Lira District beginning on 13th August 2022. James Akabwai presided over a very successful period (1994-1998) in the History of Siniya. I was lucky to belong to what he called his true cohort, those he started with from S1 – S4 and when the O Level results were returned, we had scoped position No. 37 in the Country rankings. This history is his and will never be erased.
